AMERICAN SOUTHWEST

Red Rock, Open Sky, No Agenda

1–3 weeks4.7 / 5.031 member storiesNorth America

The American Southwest is the great American road trip — and it's right here, no passport required. The combination of Zion, Bryce, the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, and Arches in a single loop is one of the most spectacular drives on the planet. Add in the food and culture of Santa Fe, the weirdness of Sedona, and the sheer emptiness of the open desert, and you've got a trip that can fill a week or a month depending on how slow you want to go.

The Guide

WHAT TO DO &
WHERE TO GO

Utah's Mighty Five

Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands, and Arches — five national parks within a few hours of each other. Zion's Angels Landing and The Narrows are iconic for good reason. Bryce at sunrise, with the hoodoos glowing orange, is one of the most photographed scenes in America. Give Utah at least 5–7 days.

Grand Canyon: Rim to River

The South Rim is the classic visit — walk the Rim Trail, watch the sunrise from Mather Point, and if your knees are up for it, hike partway down the Bright Angel Trail. The North Rim is less crowded and arguably more dramatic. Either way, the canyon earns its reputation.

Santa Fe & the High Desert

Santa Fe is one of the most distinctive cities in America — adobe architecture, world-class art galleries, green chile on everything, and a pace of life that feels genuinely different. The Plaza, Canyon Road, and the Meow Wolf immersive art experience are all worth your time.

Monument Valley & the Navajo Nation

The mittens of Monument Valley are one of the most recognizable landscapes on earth — you've seen them in a hundred westerns. Drive the 17-mile Valley Drive at sunrise or sunset for the full effect. Respect the land and the Navajo Nation's rules for visitors.

"I've done the Southwest loop three times now. Every time I find something new. It's the kind of place that gets into your blood. Two weeks minimum — don't rush it."
